What is an Annuity?

Annuities are available in various forms, but, basically, an annuity is a tax-deferred investment option that offers a savings plan with guaranteed interest rates and may not be subject to annual deposit limits.  There are many types of annuities, from Individual Retirement Accounts IRA, ROTH plans, to employer sponsored SIMPLE Annuity plans, we can help.

Annuity Basics

Purpose - to accumulate funds or create income.  An annuity is the only financial instrument that offers a guaranteed income stream that you cannot outlive. With fixed-rate annuities, you can save for retirement and minimize the risk of losing wealth due to the stock market’s volatility.

Tax Status –the annuity may or may not be a tax-favored retirement plan – your circumstances will determine which option is best for you:

  • Qualified – used to invest and contribute money to a tax-favored retirement plan.
  • Non-Qualified – purchased separately from a tax-favored retirement plan.

You choose, Now or Later (Immediate or Deferred)?

  • Deferred – Your contributions and interest grow over time to create a fund to supplement your retirement income, or deferred for later use.
  • Immediate - is an excellent choice for someone who desires an immediate source of income. You choose the payment stream.

Terms of Payout – based upon time period, amount or lifetime

  • Fixed Period – Annuity pays for a specified time period (e.g. 5 years)
  • Fixed Amount – Annuity pays up to an established amount.
  • Lifetime – Annuity pays for the remaining life of the annuitant. A guaranteed period can be established to avoid significant loss in the case of early death of the annuitant.
